1936-1939 Pre-War Gibson Advanced Jumbo AJ vintage acoustic guitar

There’s a reason why these pre-war Gibson Advanced Jumbos are the most sought after Gibson made flat top guitars. Not only because Gibson only built about 300 of these between 1936-1939, but because they sound incredible. No lie, this is quite possibly the best acoustic we have ever heard EVER. We’ve done several shootouts here at Redd 7 Recording Studio and nothing has even come close! This guitar has amazing dynamics with headroom unlike anything we’ve ever heard. Tonally balanced with lots of sweet woody low end all the way up to complex mid’s and even sweeter highs that just sing.

This instruments 85 plus year history is a mystery. Unfortunately the original top at some point was damaged. The guitar was taken to the luthier’s at Dave’s Guitars where it spent multiple years being lovingly restored by Carl Meine and his team.

For full disclosure, here is the note from Carl regarding the restoration of this instrument.

“I received this AJ in the summer of 2020. It had been stripped to bare wood and the top had been crudely replaced but not taken to completion. The original bridge, pickguard, tuners, truss rod cover and neck were in the case. The neck and back/sides did not appear to be sanded thinner than factory spec.

I removed the poorly made top and made an exact copy(same wood species, bracing shape/specs, radius, top thickness, and etc.) of another original AJ I had on loan. The top wood was a high grade, hand selected for proper grain width, piece of red spruce from "old standard".

I then rebound the entire guitar and installed new frets "between the nibs". The guitar was then sprayed with a period correct burst pattern and clear coated in a thin layer of nitro(approx. .003").

All of the wood to wood joints were done using hide glue and I did my best to replicate the shapes and construction methods Gibson would have used at the time the guitar was built.

The aforementioned original parts were all used. The guitar is strung with 12-54 strings as the main braces are 1/4" wide. It could probably handle 13's but I would recommend down tuning if not being played for extended periods. The case it resides in appears to be original”

Carl did an incredible job reviving this amazing guitar. Having an all original AJ to reference the re-construction of this instrument was crucial to the accuracy of the rebuilt top and bracing. The level of detail is spot on to an original.

So with that, we now have a “players” pre-war AJ for some lucky individual to enjoy. For those of you looking that have always wanted one of these incredibly desirable instruments, here’s your opportunity!

We promise that you will be hard pressed to find another acoustic guitar that even comes closes to this instrument.
